Merciful Father,

I know that the tiny sacrifices I make this Lent
can never serve as a real penance in my life.
But help me to make my whole life
one of following your Son.
I am filled with your love.
Let your love shine out from within me
and guide my life in this sacred journey
toward the Easter joy you offer me.

Amen.

A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Here we are in the fourth week of Lent and the eighth week of Term 1. There are only two weeks left of the Term and two weeks of Lent remaining.

As we near the end of Lent our students, with the support of their teachers, have been centring their thoughts on others. Each week, they have been learning about the plight of some of our fellow brothers and sisters around the world and the ways in which we can make a positive difference in their lives through almsgiving. In class, students watched short videos, from the Project Compassion website, that capture the stories of Laxmi from Nepal, Priscilla from Zimbabwe, Thu from Vietnam, and Teeresa from Australia. Each of these stories demonstrate how money donated to Project Compassion is used to improve other people’s lives and in turn that of the communities in which they live. They capture the transformative effect simple acts of kindness can have on others.

Our students have been focusing on intentionally doing random acts of kindness to brighten up one another’s days and give Witness to Christ. Our Year 6s will be polishing other students’ shoes as an act of service. By helping our students to be ‘others focused’ we encourage them to show compassion and love just as Jesus Himself did.

St Pius X Swimming Carnival: Champion Girl/Champion Boy

It was such an honour to be able to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our Year 3-6 students who participated in the St Pius X Swimming Carnival. Each of our students put in a stellar effort and did themselves, their families, and our school proud.

For the first time, this year, we acknowledged those students who excelled in the pool by awarding them a Champion Girl/Boy medal.  It was incredibly heart-warming to see the joy on not only the Champion Girls and Champion Boys faces, as their name was announced and their medals put around their neck, but also the joy of their peers and team-mates. Something we are proud of here at St Pius X is each person’s desire to see others succeed and their readiness to celebrate one another’s achievements.

Congratulations to the following students who received the St Pius X Champion Girl/Boy Swimming award:

Champion Girl Champion Boy
Year 3 Isabella Hayes William Lane
Year 4 Eloise Foster Leo Wilson
Year 5 Riley Kirkwood Xavier Jugov-Janiec
Year 6 Keely Beard Jye Sertis

Eloise and Xavier also took out the Runner Up Champion Girl/Boy award at the Interschool Swimming Carnival. Double congratulations to them!!

Harmony Week

Our school celebrated Harmony Day, today, by wearing something orange. Over the course of the week, students have been learning about multi-cultural Australia and celebrating our country’s diversity. We are so very blessed to live in a multi-cultural country like Australia where people live in harmony with one another and enjoy learning about and experiencing various cultural customs and cuisines.

Choir

A reminder that if your child is in Years 3-6 and would like to join our School Choir, please fill out the form and return it to school as soon as possible. Our Music teacher, Mr Dario Jiritano, has reported that he only has a small number of students who have joined so far. Click here for Choir Form

Choir runs each Wednesday morning in our Library between 8.15-8.45am. Students who join the Choir must commit to attending each session for the full duration of the year as they will be preparing to participate in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. We would also like to be able to showcase our choir at the upcoming St Pius X Fete.

Project Compassion

At the beginning of Lent, each family received a little Project Compassion box. It would be wonderful if students could return the boxes containing donations by Monday 3rd April. All money raised will go to Project Compassion to assist the less fortunate around the world.

If you would like to view the videos the students have watched in class, please click on this link https://www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion/

As a family, I encourage you to reflect upon and pray for those who are vulnerable and in need. There are more people in need of our prayers and donations than we can possibly imagine.

If you have misplaced your box, feel free to send in a donation; your child(ren) may place it in their class Project Compassion box.

Easter Raffle

Hopefully, by now you would have seen the flyers advertising our ‘Easter Raffle’. Our P&F are collecting donations of Easter eggs. There is a basket outside or at the front of each class where students may place their Easter egg donations. Thank you to all those who have already brought in Easter eggs. Our dedicated P&F will assemble the donations into hampers and raffle them off at the end of the term. All money raised from the raffle will go to LifeLink, a Catholic agency. Last year, LifeLink reached out to help over 37,000 Western Australian families and individuals in need.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

During the last two weeks of this Term, parent-teacher interviews will be taking place. If you have not yet booked a meeting with your child’s teacher, please do so at your earliest convenience. The parent-teacher interviews provide an opportunity to discuss individual student’s Interim Reports which provide an overview of their academic and social-emotional progress thus far.

Parish Mass

This year, our leadership team comprising of myself, Mr Hughes and Mrs Keightley have committed to attending our Parish Mass at 8am each Wednesday morning. It would be wonderful to see our St Pius X families join us. There are a couple of families already attending which is great. Mass concludes by 8.25am, meaning students will still be able to get to school by 8.30am. We hope to see you at Mass!

Fete

There is much excitement and anticipation building among our children with the St Pius X Fete drawing closer and closer. If you haven’t already locked 2nd April, 10am-3pm into your calendar I strongly encourage you to do so. Our amazing P&F, class representatives and parent volunteers have invested an enormous amount of time, money and energy into preparing for our fete. It is set to be a fun filled day with something for everyone. There will be a variety of stalls, rides, and activities for the whole family. We hope that every single one of our families will join us over the course of the day. Grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins are welcome to come along, too. Keep an eye out for the Big Splash – you may very well have an opportunity to dump copious amounts of water over my head and some of our teachers!!

URSTONG

As you are aware, this year, our Year 3-6 classes have been participating in the URSTRONG program. Our junior primary classes have also been learning about building healthy relationships and the various tools to maintain respectful friendships, using the URSTRONG framework.

As part of the school package, parents have free access to the resources and materials covered in class. By familiarising yourselves with the language and strategies used at school, you will be able to support your children by reinforcing the same approaches at home. If you would like to take advantage of the free resources, please click on this link  https://urstrong.com/parents/

Scroll down to ‘Become a URSTRONG Family’ and proceed to the checkout. Enjoy the wealth of resources available to you!

In these last two weeks of Lent, I invite each of you to spend some time in quiet contemplation and prayer each day. Reflect on your days through Christ’s eyes, join yourselves to the heart of Jesus as you meditate on the suffering he endured out of pure love for us, pray often and make a concerted effort to go out of your way to aid others in whatever way you can.

God bless you,

Melissa Vranjes

Kindy Spare Parts Play

The Kindy and Pre-Primary children have been having fun using our loose parts from our REmida membership. REmida is a re-use, reduce recycle centre located in West Perth.

Pre-Primary Pear Stall

Today the Pre-Primary and Kindergarten children harvested the pears from the pear tree in their playground. What a crop! Then the students packaged them and made signs for a ‘Pear Shop’, with all proceeds going to Project Compassion. They loved being ‘shopkeepers’ for the parents at home time. It was a sellout.
