Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola

O Christ Jesus,

when all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of Your presence, Your love, and Your strength. Help us to have perfect trust in Your protecting love and strengthening power, so that nothing may frighten or worry us, for, living close to You, we shall see Your hand, Your purpose, Your will through all things.

A Message from the Principal

Dear Parent and Caregivers,

Welcome back to all our wonderful families. We especially welcome those new to the St Pius X community. I hope you all managed to enjoy some rest and quality family time over the Christmas and New Year break. For many the break would have been short-lived with the return to work, however, I hope some down time was possible. It was so lovely to reconnect with our students, parents, and grandparents as they walked into the school grounds over the course of the first week.

Opening Mass

Our Year 4s beautifully led us in our first Mass for the year. The readings of the day were fitting for the beginning of the school year; the first reading spoke of the Spirit enabling our inner selves to grow strong so that Christ may live in our hearts through faith and love. The Gospel reading reminded us of the power of Christ’s love and how if we truly believe in God, anything is possible.

During this time of uncertainty, with a constantly changing COVID landscape, we need to remember to spend time with Jesus in quiet prayer and contemplation; to lift up our worries to God and have faith that the Spirit will work in us and around us providing for our needs. Wishing everyone a blessed 2022, one in which we experience much inner growth, the love, peace and joy of Christ.

Parent Night

As addressed in my letter on Friday February 4, our Parent Information Night which was scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled. In its place our teachers have uploaded a video to Seesaw outlining their class routines and term overview. I commend our teachers for responding so swiftly. As I am sure you can appreciate, our staff spent a considerable amount of time over the weekend adjusting their presentation and recording themselves so that the video may be accessible on Tuesday night.

Swimming Lessons

On Monday, our Years 3-6 students will commence their swimming lessons at Aqualife, Victoria Park. Due to the newly enforced COVID regulations, there was a little uncertainty as to whether swimming lessons would be able to go ahead. Fortunately, we have been given the green light to proceed. Swimming lessons will span from 14th Feb – 25th Feb not 14th March – 25th March as previously displayed in the calendar; our apologies for the confusion. A note outlining what the students will need to bring will be sent out to parents via email on Thursday.

Kiss and Drive

In the name of safety, for our families and fellow road users, please follow the Kiss and Drive protocols. Parking in the Kiss and Drive zone is not permitted. Nor is it permissible for vehicles to wait on the paved curbing leading into the Kiss and Drive zone. Please exercise patience, caution and abide by the road rules when approaching the Kiss and Drive area.

As many of you would have already noticed, we upgraded our school website over the school holidays. As is always the case when transitioning to a new platform, there have been some minor teething problems. Thank you for your patience whilst we troubleshoot these issues in collaboration with our IT team and website designer.

COVID-19 Restrictions

In response to the Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Sue Ellery, and the Minister for Child Protection and Community Services, the Hon Simone McGurk’s announcement on Monday afternoon, the following actions have been enforced:

  • Parents will be permitted on school sites for drop-off and pick-up in outdoor locations only; consequently, parents may not enter classrooms.
  • a parent should only attend the school office in the event of a significant pastoral or welfare issue related to their child; parents need to notify their child’s teacher in writing if they need to pick their child up early for an appointment etc.
  • wherever possible, interactions by staff with parents should take place over the phone or via email.
  • Gatherings of parents on school sites are to be avoided.
  • Parent-teacher interviews are to occur online or over the phone.
  • Mask wearing for parents will be expanded to the outdoors.

As outlined in previous correspondence, whole school gatherings onsite are not permitted under the current regulations. Infrequent offsite events, that are held outdoors, such as sport carnivals and inter-school carnivals are permitted at this stage – provided physical distancing, mask mandates and venue rules for proof of vaccination are adhered to. Only staff, students and necessary parent volunteers are able to attend these outdoors, infrequent offsite school based events (e.g. our swimming trials and swimming carnival).

If your child is displaying symptoms and you have taken him/her to have a PCR test, please notify the school if a positive test result is returned.

Please ensure your have provided the school with your current email address and contact details. It is essential these are kept updated so that in the event of a COVID positive test result in our school, immediate contact may be made with families.

Thank you for your cooperation with our evolving restrictions, your patience and support.

Blessing of SPX Parish Columbarium

On Sunday, the most reverend Archbishop Timothy Costelloe blessed the opening of our parish’s columbarium. If you have not had the opportunity to visit it, I strongly encourage you to do so. Father Patrick, with the assistance of devoted parishioners, designed and created the beautiful space to commemorate the faithful departed and provide loved ones with a space to connect with them and God. The striking mosaic behind the statue of our Blessed Mother Mary, was cleverly crafted by Fr Patrick himself, as was the lovely cross and garden.

Stay safe and God Bless,

Melissa Vranjes

School News

Drop Off/Pick-up

Remember to park in the designated areas and abide by the road rules.  Please do not park in neighbouring driveways or on verges around the school as this causes unrest with our neighbours. Remind your children which gate they are to be collected from and, upon collection, keep them with you so we know who still needs to be picked up.

Parents and students are reminded that the two pick-up points are Cloister Avenue (near the play equipment) and Ley St entrance. Kindy and Pre-Primary children will need to be collected from the classroom.

Gates – Cloister Avenue

Parents are advised that the gates on Cloister Avenue and Ley Street will be closed after 9:00 am each day and opened at 3:00 pm. Parents and visitors to the school are asked to use the single gate at administration on Cloister Ave between 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Please press the bell and the ladies in Admin will open the gate for you.

Medical Information

Please notify Admin of any medical conditions that your child may have, including any changes to current diagnoses or action plans.  Children with asthma and severe allergies need to have an up-to-date plan, signed by your GP, submitted to the Office.

Student Absenteeism

Parents must inform the school/class teachers prior to the child being absent if it involves a previously arranged appointment. If parents have forgotten to do so they must inform the school via the office before 9.30am on the day—this can be done by emailing or filling in the absentee form on our website.

If your child is absent for half a day or more an Absentee Note must be completed and given to the class teachers on the child’s return. These are available from our website or the school office. It is important that we establish this routine immediately and continue to maintain it each day whilst at school. It has always been important for children to arrive to school on time but even more so now.

Code Of Conduct

St Pius X Catholic School has a Code of Conduct that applies to all staff, students, volunteers, parents and guardians.  Click on the link to view our Code of Conduct.

Fathering Project - Dads and Kids event

Hi Dads and male role models of St Pius X.

The dads’ group, born through the Fathering Project, are gathering for a game of mini golf at the Collier Park course on Friday 25th February 2022.

The eventbrite link is here:

Eventbrite Event

This will help book our group rate for mini golf, $20 for a Dad with a Child and extra Children $6. (Family rate).

Dads  will need to partner up to play in groups of 4-6 players.

Each Dad should order dinner at the cafe for themselves and kids before tee-off. A simplified cafe menu will be shared and dinner will be served in the function room.

Return to the cafe after golf to let them know you’re done.

The event is planned from 5pm, onwards. If you intend on tackling the full 18 hole course; it is recommended you arrive early enough as it can take about 1.5 hours.

For dads working later or with younger kids that may not see out the course, a later start time is also fine.

The venue must close at 8pm, to ensure all golfers get a chance to eat and talk to their friends. We’ll vacate the course before 7pm.

This venue is licensed, so no BYO alcohol.

We’ll dine in the function room, with appropriate social distancing, to share our golfing stories.

If you’ve got questions, please contact Michael Cain, 0417 922 843, (or Kim Hughes via email).

Please note this is subject to change  – It is advisable to save the date but hold off from making a booking until closer to the date, due to ever changing COVID-19 restrictions.
